Riverview Hospital Cancer Center

What: cancer hats/chemo caps, shawls, lap blankets, heart pillows

When: ONGOING, we will donate them 1-2 times per year

How many: however many you would like to make

Details:
*Important*
Please pre-wash your cottons in warm water, and dry in dryer to pre-shrink! There’s nothing worse than putting all that work in a project just to have it shrink and be too small, or the colors run all over everything! (Believe me, I’ve done it!)
Cancer hats/chemo caps:
* Bald-headed t-shirts’, which would be a simple, basic t-shirt knit hat to wear at home, while sleeping, or underneath another hat like a straw hat, or other decorative hat
* A dressier hat that can be worn out in public.

For fabric hats: use soft cotton knit, some styles you may be able to use woven cotton; or for colder weather, fleece or flannel work well.

For knit or crochet hats: we recommend Caron Simply Soft (acrylic yarn), soft baby yarn, or other yarn that is soft and comfy. Please no wool unless it is completely lined, and no large holes in the knit or crochet hats!

Shawls: either long rectangular (2′-2.5′ wide and 4′-5′ long) or triangular (around 5’-6’ on the long edge); they can be knit, crochet, or made of fabric: fleece, flannel, cottons.

Lap Blankets: lap quilt size, recommended size about 40″ to 50″ wide by 60″ to 70″ long; they can be knit, crochet, or made of fabric: cotton, t-shirt knits, flannel, fleece, quilted

Heart shaped pillows: for support during chemo; they can be cotton, flannel, fleece, or something soft and comfortable

Notes:
Hats: Here’s a basic head sizing chart from Crafty Yarn Council, and a more detailed one from Iowa State University.

Shawls & blankets: Please be aware of how heavy they may be if they’re knit or crochet. Try using a nice, open stitch.

When using fleece on shawls or blankets, use only one layer, two layers would be too heavy.

Psalm 90:17

May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us - yes, establish the work of our hands.
